{"id":318,"date":"2025-08-16T09:09:51","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T09:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifefe.com\/?p=318"},"modified":"2025-08-16T09:13:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T09:13:11","slug":"officer-involved-shooting-in-south-los-angeles-leaves-one-officer-injured-suspect-in-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifefe.com\/?p=318","title":{"rendered":"Officer-Involved Shooting in South Los Angeles Leaves One Officer Injured; Suspect in Custody"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Los Angeles, California \u2014<\/strong> On <strong>July 5, 2025, at approximately 3:45 p.m.<\/strong>, uniformed officers from the <strong>Southwest Area Gang Enforcement Detail<\/strong> were conducting routine patrol along the <strong>Western Avenue corridor<\/strong> near <strong>Martin Luther King Jr. Park (MLK Park)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While on patrol, officers observed a male riding a bicycle northbound on the sidewalk. The individual was later identified as <strong>26-year-old Ernesto Sepulveda<\/strong>, a local resident. Based on observations and reasonable suspicion that Sepulveda was armed with a handgun, officers initiated a pedestrian stop in the <strong>3900 block of South Western Avenue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When contacted, Sepulveda refused to comply and <strong>suddenly fled on foot<\/strong>. During the pursuit, Sepulveda <strong>removed a firearm from his waistband and opened fire on the officers<\/strong>, resulting in an <strong>Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One officer was <strong>struck in the legs by gunfire<\/strong>. Despite wounding an officer, Sepulveda continued running southbound along Western Avenue. He then <strong>fired an additional round<\/strong> at responding backup officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moments later, Sepulveda\u2019s firearm <strong>malfunctioned<\/strong>, forcing him to <strong>discard the weapon<\/strong> before fleeing deeper into MLK Park. Responding officers pursued him on foot and employed a <strong>Non-Categorical Use of Force (NCUOF)<\/strong> to take Sepulveda into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following his arrest, Sepulveda was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a head laceration. He was medically cleared and released for booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The injured officer was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for <strong>gunshot wounds to both legs and a graze wound to his cheek<\/strong>. The officer remains hospitalized in <strong>stable condition<\/strong>. Fortunately, no other officers or community members were injured during the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the scene, investigators recovered a <strong>black, steel, Polymer 80 \u201cGhost Gun\u201d chambered in 9mm<\/strong>, a loaded magazine, and multiple expended cartridge casings.
