Steve Burton has once again confirmed that he is stepping away from General Hospital, sending shockwaves through the fandom and reigniting speculation about Jason Morgan’s fate. After more than three decades on and off the canvas, Jason’s latest departure raises the biggest question of all: how will he disappear this time?

Jason Morgan has left Port Charles many times before, and history suggests his exit will not be simple. From voluntary departures to presumed deaths and dramatic returns, Jason’s past departures offer major clues about what could happen next.

Jason Has Walked Away Before to Protect the People He Loves

One of Jason’s earliest major exits came in 2000, when mobster Joseph Sorel targeted his loved ones, even planting a bomb in Elizabeth Webber’s studio. Fearing that his presence would put everyone he cared about in danger, Jason made the painful decision to leave Port Charles.

He said emotional goodbyes to Liz, his mother Monica, Carly, and Sonny, then rode out of town on his motorcycle. This established a recurring theme in Jason’s story: he leaves not because he wants to, but because he believes it’s the only way to keep others safe.

Dangerous Business Has Always Pulled Jason Away

Jason didn’t stay gone long. He returned later in 2000, but his presence immediately complicated Liz’s relationship with Lucky, who had actually been held captive rather than dead. Carly tried to pursue a romantic relationship with Jason, but he rejected her and encouraged her to marry Sonny instead.

After rescuing Emily, Jason once again left Port Charles in October to handle dangerous business for Sonny in Puerto Rico. In 2001, he returned secretly, hiding out in Liz’s studio, which triggered jealousy and suspicion from Lucky and led to violent confrontations fueled by Helena Cassadine’s manipulation.

When Jason discovered another bomb threat, he once again considered leaving town and even asked Liz to go with him. She declined, reinforcing the idea that Jason’s life would always be too dangerous for the people he loved.

The Infamous “Death” That Shocked Port Charles

Jason’s most iconic disappearance came in 2012, when he was shot and pushed into the water off a pier by someone believed to be Duke Lavery — later revealed to be Faison in disguise. As Jason checked on a dying Bernie, he was shot in the back and kicked into the harbor.

No body was ever recovered, leading Sam and Monica to cling to hope that he might still be alive. This storyline cemented Jason as one of the soap genre’s most famous “presumed dead” characters.

The Twin Twist That Changed Everything

In 2017, Jason resurfaced, leading to one of General Hospital’s biggest twists: the man everyone believed was Jason for the previous three years was actually his twin brother, Drew Cain. The real Jason had been missing, once again proving that death is rarely permanent in Port Charles.

This twist reshaped multiple relationships and demonstrated how far the writers were willing to go to keep Jason’s legacy alive while introducing shocking narrative turns.

Buried Alive — And Presumed Dead Again

Jason faced another presumed death in 2021 during the Cassadine Island storyline. While trying to rescue Britt and Obrecht, he was trapped in a tunnel collapse after Peter began shooting at them. Scans later showed no signs of life, leaving Britt devastated and the town convinced that Jason was gone once again.

But, true to soap tradition, Jason once again proved nearly impossible to kill.

Jason’s 2024 Return Came With New Complications

Jason reappeared in Port Charles in 2024, alive but under the control of the FBI. His return marked a new chapter in his life, as he tried to reconnect with his son Danny and reestablish himself within the Quartermaine family.

He also grew closer to Anna Devane, who was experiencing psychological turmoil and believed Faison might still be alive. Jason became a stabilizing force for her. Meanwhile, he slowly rebuilt Britt’s trust and promised to help her escape Cullum’s control — a promise that now hangs in the balance as he prepares to leave again.

Steve Burton Confirms Another Hiatus — What Happens Next?

Now, Steve Burton has confirmed that he is taking another break from General Hospital, meaning Jason Morgan will once again vanish from Port Charles. While the hiatus is not permanent, the way Jason exits could have massive consequences for multiple storylines.

Will Jason leave voluntarily, believing his presence endangers Danny, Britt, or Anna? Will he be pulled into another dangerous mission by the FBI or the Corinthos organization? Or will General Hospital once again use the classic soap trope — a shocking presumed death designed to set up a dramatic comeback?

History Offers Clues About Jason’s Fate

Jason’s past exits follow three recurring patterns:

  1. He leaves voluntarily to protect the people he loves.

  2. He disappears on a dangerous mission tied to organized crime or secret agencies.

  3. He is presumed dead, only to return later in a shocking twist.

Given Steve Burton’s temporary hiatus, the most likely scenario is an open-ended exit that keeps the door wide open for his return. Whether it’s a mysterious disappearance, a high-risk mission, or another death fake-out, Jason’s departure is guaranteed to send shockwaves through Port Charles.

One Thing Is Certain: Jason’s Exit Will Change Everything

Jason Morgan is not just another character — he is a cornerstone of General Hospital. His relationships with Sonny, Danny, Britt, Anna, and the Quartermaines shape major storylines. Every time he leaves, lives are altered, alliances shift, and emotional fallout ripples across the canvas.

As Steve Burton steps away once again, fans are left with the same haunting question: Is this just another temporary goodbye, or the beginning of Jason’s most shocking disappearance yet?
