The real tension comes from the possibility that the man he intends to take down may not be the one who actually falls. That is why the theory surrounding Brennan has started to feel so compelling. Jason may be locked in on Cullum from the very beginning, but one wrong move at the wrong second could turn a calculated hit into a devastating mistake.

The strongest version of this theory begins with a simple point: Jason is not going there to kill Brennan. Everything about the situation suggests that Cullum is the one in Jason’s sights. Cullum is the bigger threat, the more urgent problem, and the target Jason would logically choose if he is trying to end the danger before leaving town. That part of the scene matters, because it means any outcome involving Brennan getting shot would not come from a sudden change of heart. It would come from timing, movement, and a split second that changes everything.

That is exactly what makes Brennan’s position so suspicious. If Jack is standing directly in or near the line of fire, the scene instantly becomes more dangerous than it first appears. Soap operas love moments like this, where the audience sees disaster forming before the characters do. Brennan does not have to be the target to become the victim. He only has to be in the wrong place when Jason commits to pulling the trigger. If the shot is already in motion, there may be no way to stop what happens next.

Cullum’s movement could be the detail that seals Brennan’s fate. Jason does not need to miss for this theory to work. In fact, it is stronger if he does not miss at all. He could take the shot with complete precision at the exact place Cullum is standing, only for Cullum to shift, turn, or step aside at the last possible moment. In that version of events, Jason is still every bit as deadly and accurate as he has always been. The problem is not his skill. The problem is that the scene changes in a heartbeat, and Brennan ends up taking the bullet meant for someone else.

That distinction matters because longtime viewers are never going to accept the idea that Jason suddenly becomes careless or incompetent. His entire reputation has been built on control, focus, and deadly efficiency. The phrase “Jason never misses” is not just fan talk. It is part of the character’s identity. So if Brennan is the one who gets shot, the most believable way to handle it is not to show Jason losing his edge. It is to show the circumstances around him shifting faster than anyone could react. That preserves who Jason is while still delivering a crushing twist.

The emotional fallout would be far more powerful if Brennan goes down instead of Cullum. If Jason successfully shoots Cullum, that is a mission completed. Dangerous, yes, but straightforward. If Jack is hit by mistake, the story becomes much more tragic. Jason would have to live with the fact that he pulled the trigger intending one outcome and caused another. That is a much heavier burden than carrying out a hit on a chosen target. It would hit even harder if Jason had already been shown hesitating, reflecting on his family, or revealing that he is not as emotionally detached as he once was.

This is where the theory becomes even more interesting, because Brennan being shot would send shockwaves far beyond the shooting itself. Carly would almost certainly be dragged into the center of the fallout. She could not easily stand at a distance if Jack is the one lying wounded. That alone would raise the emotional stakes dramatically. Jason may not mean to hurt Brennan, but intention does not erase damage. If Carly sees the consequences up close, the situation could put Jason in a position where explanations no longer matter.

Joss would likely react even more harshly. She already struggles with everything Jason and Sonny represent. If Brennan is hit because of Jason’s bullet, even accidentally, Joss could take it as final proof that violence always destroys everyone around Jason. In that case, the shooting would not only injure one person physically. It would deepen the fracture in the relationships around him and make it even harder for Jason to defend the life he has led.

From a storytelling perspective, this twist gives the writers much more to work with than a simple assassination. Brennan taking the bullet keeps Cullum alive, which allows the villain story to continue. At the same time, it gives viewers a massive cliffhanger and a more painful emotional aftermath. That is the kind of soap twist that lands hardest, because it combines shock with consequences. Nobody simply moves on from it.

In the end, that is why this theory works so well. Jason can still be aiming at Cullum. He can still be completely locked in. He can still be the same lethal man viewers have always known. But if Brennan steps into the wrong space at the exact wrong moment, the shot could change everything. Jason would not just fail to get the clean outcome he wanted. He could trigger a disaster that follows him long after the gun goes off.

What makes this setup so explosive is not simply whether Jason fires the shot.
