Sonny Corinthos may not have to lose a war to lose his empire. He may simply have to step away long enough for somebody else to realize the throne is sitting there unprotected. And if Sonny truly intends to reduce his involvement in the mob, Port Charles could be heading toward a massive power vacuum. The most dangerous part? The man perfectly positioned to exploit it may have already arrived: RJ Gannon.

RJ’s arrival can initially look completely personal. His connection to Isaiah gives him an obvious reason to come to Port Charles, involve himself in the crisis surrounding his family, and start learning exactly who holds power in town. But that explanation only works for so long. Once Isaiah’s immediate problems are handled, one question becomes impossible to ignore: Why would RJ stay?
That could become the clue that changes everything. Instead of packing his bags, RJ could start asking questions that have nothing to do with Isaiah. Who controls which businesses? Who still answers to Sonny? Which alliances are solid, and which ones are beginning to crack? Suddenly, RJ would no longer look like a concerned relative visiting Port Charles. He would look like a man studying the board before making his first move.
The timing could not be more dangerous for Sonny. For decades, his greatest weapon has been certainty. Friends, enemies and competitors all understood where the boundaries were because Sonny’s power was unquestioned. But the moment he begins withdrawing from that world, uncertainty replaces fear. People who once followed Sonny because he was untouchable could begin wondering what comes next — and whether someone else can offer them a better future.
That is where RJ could become far more dangerous than a traditional mob enemy. He would not need to arrive with gunmen or declare war on the Corinthos organization. In fact, attacking Sonny directly would be the worst possible strategy. RJ could simply wait, build relationships and quietly collect the pieces Sonny no longer wants to hold.
Brick could be the first person to recognize exactly what is happening. While Sonny sees RJ as a Gannon dealing with a family problem, Brick would notice the pattern. RJ is talking to too many people. He knows too much about Sonny’s operation. He keeps appearing around individuals who have no obvious connection to Isaiah. One question here and one private conversation there could be enough for Brick to realize RJ is not preparing to leave Port Charles at all.
That realization could deliver the perfect warning: “He didn’t come here for Isaiah anymore.”
Sonny might initially dismiss the concern. RJ would have to be reckless to challenge him openly, and nothing about RJ suggests recklessness. But Brick could identify the much more disturbing truth. RJ does not have to challenge Sonny. He only has to prepare for the moment Sonny no longer wants to defend every piece of his territory.
Then the takeover could begin without anyone calling it a takeover. One longtime contact starts taking RJ’s calls. A business opportunity that once belonged automatically to Sonny suddenly lands elsewhere. Someone inside Sonny’s extended network decides RJ is the safer investment. Individually, none of those moves would look catastrophic. Together, they would reveal an empire being dismantled one piece at a time.
The ultimate confrontation would not even require violence. Imagine Sonny sitting across from RJ expecting an explanation, only for RJ to calmly acknowledge what everyone else has been afraid to say: Sonny wants out. RJ could offer to take responsibility for certain operations, supposedly preventing chaos and keeping Port Charles stable.
It would sound like a peace offering.
Sonny would immediately understand what it really means.
RJ Gannon is asking for his throne.
That could transform RJ’s crossover from a temporary family storyline into something much bigger. Isaiah may be the reason RJ enters Port Charles, but power could become the reason he refuses to leave. And rather than introducing another villain determined to destroy Sonny, General Hospital could create something far more threatening — a successor willing to wait for Sonny to surrender the kingdom himself.
The biggest twist, then, would not be RJ defeating Sonny Corinthos.
It would be Sonny opening the door and realizing too late that RJ Gannon has already walked through it.
