General Hospital took a heartfelt pause before its September 25 episode to honor both Monica Quartermaine and the actress who brought her to life for nearly five decades, Leslie Charleson. Ahead of the on-screen memorial, the soap released a special tribute video filled with classic clips and touching reflections from cast members.
Honoring Leslie Charleson
The video, which you can see below, celebrated Charleson’s impact on GH since her debut in 1977. Finola Hughes (Anna) remembered her as someone who brought laughter behind the scenes. “The way that we should all remember Leslie is that she was an awful lot of fun,” Hughes shared.
The reel also revisited April’s 62nd anniversary episode, when Port Charles honored Monica with the dedication of the Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Care Center. Kristina Wagner (Felicia) called it a meaningful tribute. “They gave Bobbie the diner,” she explained, “and so it’s really sweet that they made that her legacy.”
A Legacy of Strength and Storytelling
Wally Kurth (Ned) highlighted Charleson’s ability to handle powerful material, recalling her acclaimed breast cancer storyline. “She wasn’t always given the real dramatic stuff,” he said, “but the breast cancer storyline, in particular, was really moving.” Clips of Monica’s emotional moments with Gail underscored Charleson’s depth as both an actress and colleague.
John J. York (Mac) also remembered her for her sharp wit. “She was, like me, very irreverent,” he said with a smile. “So things that we shared on stage, I cannot share with you here today. But that was what was great about her.”
Monica’s Place in GH History
The tribute concluded with scenes from Monica’s upcoming funeral, as Genie Francis (Laura) placed Charleson alongside GH’s most iconic figures. “She is like a Dr. Hardy or a Jessie Brewer,” she reflected. “These people are General Hospital. They made General Hospital.”
As Port Charles prepares to say farewell to Monica Quartermaine, fans are reminded of Leslie Charleson’s extraordinary contributions that will remain woven into the fabric of the show forever.
