Adding Depth and Nuance to Emma’s Story on General Hospital

Pulling in Anna and Robin.

Emma and Gio kissed this week on General Hospital. Aw… we agree; they are adorable together, and we are looking forward to seeing how this budding romance develops. But before we look ahead for Emma, we’d like to take a quick look back and see how her story could have been made even more emotional.

She’s a Rebel and She’ll Never, Ever Change

Emma (Braedyn Bruner) has taken a firm stance against Professor Dalton (Daniel Goddard) using animals in his research, especially when he isn’t limiting himself to rats or flies, but experimenting on higher-level species, like dogs. This is a valid stance to take. Emma is hardly the only one.

But the problem is, Dalton is experimenting with cold fusion. And, at least in the world outside of Port Charles, cold fusion doesn’t require animal research. It’s mostly electrodes, heavy water, and lots of math. So, unless Dalton has dogs doing his calculations for him, he has no need for research animals.

Health Food for Thought

How much better a story would it have been if Dalton had been working in the biological space? Researching a cure for a disease. That definitely would require research animals. That would have made Emma’s stance a bit murkier. Especially if the disease Dalton was seeking a cure for was… HIV. Emma’s mother, Robin (Kimberly McCullough), has been living with the illness since 1994.

What if Dalton’s research with animals could have cured Emma’s mother? As well as millions of other people? What if it could have prevented literally hundreds of thousands of deaths? Men, women, children? But before he was ready to try it on humans, he had to test it on animals. Would Emma have been so certain then? And, even if she had been, wouldn’t that have added so much to her story?
